In the current digitalized ecosystem, there has been a lot of buzz around the trend of Hyperconverged Infrastructure (HCI). Main reasons for HCI technology gaining such traction is that it adds a level of scalability, ensures fast-paced deployment and adds resilience to enterprises IT operations. The fact that businesses can get all this without “breaking the bank”, is obviously an added bonus.

Basic Working of a Hyper-Converged Infrastructure (HCI)

HCI works towards combining all the elements of a traditional data center, such as storage, computing, management along with virtualization in a single system, known as nodes. It replaces traditional, complex and costly infrastructures with a distributed platform. These platforms are based on industry-standard, commodity servers and locally attached storage devices.

In HCI, a specialized software is used to develop a distributed IT environment. This IT environment integrates storage and servers with intelligent software. Another unique selling point (USP) of HCI is that it gets rid of the common “pain points’ that come with traditional IT infrastructures.

This results in improved performance and resilience, allowing enterprises to precisely scale their workloads, as per their requirements.

Additionally, the management pane in HCI solutions allow you to administer HCI resources from a single interface, in a seamless manner. This is a great way to separate management solutions for storage, networks or virtualization.

In the following points we have enlisted the types of applications that can be run on HCI.

· Cloud native applications.

· Databases.

· Big data.

· Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI).

Key Differences Between HCI and Cloud Solutions

Hyper-Converged Infrastructure (HCI) and Cloud solutions are both used to deliver scalable and agile IT services for businesses. However, they do differ in the following mentioned key ways.

· While HCI integrates compute, storage, and network resources into a single appliance, Cloud solutions, on the other hand, leverage remote servers and storage.

· HCI is deployed on-premises and managed by the deploying enterprises, while Cloud solutions are managed by a third-party Cloud Service Provider (CSP) and can be accessed from any remote location, over the internet.

· HCI can be a lot more cost-effective for organizations with limited IT budgets, while Cloud solutions can be relatively expensive, as they typically require ongoing subscription fees.

In conclusion, both HCI and Cloud Computing solutions have their own strengths and weaknesses. The choice between them will depend on the specific requirements and use cases of an enterprise.

That said, regardless of an enterprises size and form, Hyper-Converged Infrastructure (HCI) can provide a flexible and cost-effective way to manage businesses IT resources. This ends up freeing employees’ time and enterprises’ resources for more strategic and value generating initiatives.
